WHEN I STARTED TO COMPILE A BOOK OF 100 OR SO OF MY QUIRKY CARTOONS I HAD TO ASK MYSELF WHAT IS FUNNY TO ME AND WHAT CAN I PUT IN A BOOK WITHOUT OFFENDING ANYONE. OF COURSE POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS HUMOR CAME TO MIND FIRST. ‘JESUS DOING STAND UP’ AND ‘MOSES COMING DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN WITH THE TABLETS’ ARE TWO OF MY FAVORITES AND ARE COMPLETELY BENIGN. I DEFINITELY WILL PUT THOSE TWO CARTOONS IN THIS BOOK. IDEAS FOR CARTOONS COME FROM THINGS I HEAR THAT CAN BE UNDERSTOOD IN MORE THAN ONE WAY. DOUBLE ENTENDRES, ALLITERATION, PUNS AND RHYMES ARE ALL FODDER FOR MY CARTOONS. IF I CAN VISUALIZE THE IMAGE I DRAW IT. I DON’T KNOW WHAT SPARKS SOME OF THE CARTOONS SUCH AS THE VACUUM SERIES, THE FLY SERIES, THE WORM SERIES OR THE SLUG SERIES. THEY JUST COME UNBIDDEN AND ONCE THEY START I FOLLOW THE IDEAS UNTIL THEY STOP. THAT’S USUALLY ENOUGH TO KEEP ME OFF THE STREETS. SOME IDEAS ARE FUNNY RIGHT AWAY BUT THE IMAGE WON’T COME AS QUICKLY SO I KEEP THEM IN MY HEAD, (SOMETIMES FOR YEARS). IF THEY HANG IN THERE, AT SOME POINT, THEY COME OUT IN ONE FORM OR OTHER. THIS BOOK IS LAID OUT CHRONOLOGICALLY (YEARS 1979-2020). WHILE COMPLETING THIS BOOK, MORE IDEAS COME TO MIND AND THAT’S A GOOD THING.
About the author
VINCENT SANSONE HAS ALWAYS LOVED DRAWING. EVEN AS A LITTLE KID. HE STARTED OUT SCRIBBLING LIKE MOST KIDS AND GRADUATED TO STICK FIGURES. WHEN BOYS WERE STARTING TO TAKE MOTORS APART AND PUT BACK TOGETHER, HE CONTINUED DRAWING. HE WAS STILL DRAWING IN HIGH SCHOOL. HE HATED SCHOOL AND WHEN HE GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL HE VOWED HE’D NEVER GO TO SCHOOL AGAIN. AFTER HE WORKED IN A FACTORY FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS, HE WENT TO ART SCHOOL TO STUDY PAINTING AND DRAWING. THAT WASN’T THE FIRST TIME HE HAD TO EAT HIS WORDS, BY THE TIME HE WAS GETTING HIS BFA IN PAINTING HE DISCOVERED CLAY. IT HAD BEEN THERE ALL ALONG BUT HE HADN’T NOTICED. THEN HE GOT HIS MFA IN CERAMIC ARTS AND HAS BEEN MAKING POTS AND CLAY SCULPTURE, TEACHING CLAY TO OTHERS AND STILL DRAWING, OF COURSE. THE FIRST CARTOON HE PUT OUT FOR ALL TO SEE WAS IN 1979. IT WAS THE DEMISE OF RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER, WHICH WAS FUNNY TO HIM AND A GREAT CHRISTMAS CARD. HE CONTINUES TO DRAW CARTOONS. HE SAYS ‘LIFE IS TO BE ENJOYED AND IF YOU CAN FIND HUMOR IN IT THAT MAKES IT MORE FUN. AND IF YOU CAN SHARE THAT HUMOR WITH OTHERS, THAT’S BETTER STILL!’
