Three years ago, in looking up a reference to Piers Gaveston, the author was surprised to find so little available material relating to one who had been practically Dictator of England. Researches since made have encouraged him to think that some study of the career of this remarkable man may be of interest, and may perhaps even form what Stevenson called a Footnote to History.<br><br>The contemporary writers on the Reign of Edward II. make few references to Gaveston. Their genealogical records are scanty.
