William Hazlitt (1778–1830) gilt unter Fachleuten als einer der brillantesten, wenn nicht gar als der brillanteste Kritiker und Essayist in der Geschichte der englischen Sprache und wird oft mit Samuel Johnson oder George Orwell in einem Atemzug genannt. Einem breiteren Publikum ist er jedoch heute kaum noch bekannt – was bei seiner extrem scharfen Zunge und bestechenden Schreibweise zu heute noch ebenso drängenden Fragen und Themen mehr als verwunderlich ist: Auf einem Fundament ausgreifender literarischer, kunstgeschichtlicher und philosophischer Bildung lässt er in seinen Essays, Kurztexten, Rezensionen und Kritiken die Funken sprühen – so dass oft auch die Fetzen fliegen. Er war ebenso ein ernstzunehmender Maler (und deshalb auch: ein ebenso ernstgenommener wie gefürchteter Kunstkritiker) und befreundet mit Größen seiner Zeit wie Stendhal, William Godwin, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, John Keats und Charles und Mary Lamb.
