About the author


William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) was born in southeast London. He was educated at home, learning to survey from his father. He studied the geometry of Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid of Giza. He excavated some of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt, and held the first chair of Egyptology in the United Kingdom.
