Originally published anonymously and in serial form in Harper’s Magazine, The Inner Shrine is the story of a French–Irish girl whose husband is killed in a duel. The identity of the novel’s author sparked a frenzy of speculation when the book was published in 1909, and a few years later Basil King admitted the he was the author of the much-acclaimed story.

William Benjamin Basil King (1859–1928) was a Canadian-born clergyman who became a writer after retiring from the clergy due to poor eyesight and ill health. King wrote a number of best-selling novels, including The Inner Shrine, The Wild Olive, and The Street Called Straight. Many of his novels and non-fiction works were spiritually oriented.
