Clifford Whittingham Beers (1876-1943) was the founder of the American mental hygiene movement. He was one of five children of the Beers family, all of whom have suffered from psychological distress and spent time in mental institutions, including Beers himself. After experiencing and witnessing serious maltreatment, he gained the support of the medical profession and others in the work to reform the treatment of the mentally ill. Beers was a leader in the field of mental hygiene and health until his retirement in 1939.
