Ernest William Hornung, better known as E. W. Hornung (1866–1921), was an English author, most celebrated for his creation of the character A. J. Raffles, a gentleman thief in late Victorian England. A master of crime fiction and a pioneer of the gentleman-crook genre, Hornung’s work is marked by a distinctive blend of suspense, wit, and a touch of romance. His literary career began with publications such as ‘A Bride from the Bush’ in 1890, but his fame was truly cemented with ‘The Amateur Cracksman’ in 1899, where Raffles made his first appearance. This collection was followed by ‘The Black Mask’ (1901) and ‘A Thief in the Night’ (1905), along with the novel ‘Mr. Justice Raffles’ (1909). Hornung’s work is included in the ‘E. W.
