Whilst his first work, ‘Tamerlane and Other Poems’ was published in 1827 in relative obscurity, it was the publication of ‘The Raven and Other Poems’ in 1845, that brought him instant success. Clarke was an Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator – and a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement.
