Roast Beef, Medium follows the adventures of Emma Mc Chesney—a divorced, independent, traveling saleswoman for a skirt and petticoat company. The stories, originally published in American Magazine between 1911 and 1913, brought Ferber her first big success. She went on to publish two additional volumes of Emma’s adventures and adapt them into a Broadway play.

Edna Ferber (1885-1968) was an American journalist and writer. Her stories feature strong female protagonists as well as characters who overcome discrimination. Her 1924 novel So Big won the Pulitzer Prize, and her novel Show Boat (1926) was adapted into one of the great American musicals. Her later novel Giant (1952) was made into blockbuster film.
