Francis Parkman (1823-1893), America’s preeminent historian of his time, studied at Harvard University and later became professor of horticulture there. He was also a founder of the Archaeological Institute of America. Although he had many physical challenges – he suffered from lameness and near-blindness – he remained dedicated to his writing and published eight volumes of history. Like many other Bostonians, Parkman was intrigued by the American West, which resulted in the following books on the subject: The Oregon Trail, The Conspiracy of Pontiac and the Indian War After the Conquest of Canada, and The Discovery of the West.
