Hélène Cixous nace en 1937 en Orán, Argelia, en una familia judía con raíces sefaradí por el lado paterno y asquenazí por el lado materno, reuniendo los orígenes alemán, español, checoslovaco y húngaro. Su infancia y adolescencia transcurren en Argelia, en una enriquecedora mezcla de lenguas y culturas, donde por un lado la familia Cixous sufre las consecuencias de las leyes antisemitas de Vichy, y por otro lado la hostilidad de los vecinos “árabes” que los confunden con enemigos “franceses”. Esta doble experiencia de despojo y exclusión, simbolizada también por la muerte de su padre en 1948, marca a Hélène Cixous y se convertirá en uno de los motores de su devenir literario: el rechazo de cualquier identidad estable, ya sea como “mujer”, como “judía” o como “feminista”; y también su compromiso político contra cualquier forma de exclusión, especialmente a través del teatro. La primera “novela” de Cixous, Dedans, recibió el Premio Medici en 1969. Inaugura una obra singular en el panorama de la literatura contemporánea, que incluye hasta el día de hoy más de setenta libros, entre “ficciones” –la etiqueta de novela no se ajusta a su condición transgresora–, ensayos literarios y artísticos, y obras de teatro. Sus ficciones, que constituyen la parte más amplia y lo más importante de su obra, trabajan la lengua francesa de una manera única, al igual que otros grandes autores: Proust, Montaigne o Stendhal, pero también y especialmente Jacques Derrida. En sus últimos trabajos se reconecta con la herencia materna alemana (su madre, Ève Cixous, nació y creció en Osnabrück); 1938, nuites (2019), por ejemplo, revive la funesta “Noche de los cristales rotos”, que arrojó luz sobre el inicio del genocidio de judíos europeos por los nazis. Cixous tiene una estrecha relación con el mundo del teatro, en particular a través de su colaboración con Ariane Mnouchkine y el Théâtre du Soleil, para el cual escribe obras que son parte del legado de los grandes trágicos griegos y de Shakespeare. Su primera pieza teatral es Portrait de Dora, dirigida por Simone Benmussa en 1976.
