Editor Horace J. Bridges (1880-1955) compared Kennett”s translation with the original Latin and, by admission, made a few changes of his own, but “interfered as little as possible with Kennett”s quaint and racy English.” Bridges also wrote a lengthy (nearly 10, 000 words) introduction to the work, appropriately entitled “In Praise of Erasmus.” A recent English immigrant to the United States and newly naturalized citizen, author and lecturer Bridges was then Leader of the Chicago Ethical Society (now the Ethical Humanist Society of Chicago).
