The action begins in the sky, when the demon Mephistopheles makes a bet with God on whether Faust will be able to save his soul from him. At this moment, professor Faust, realizing that the internal secrets of the universe are unacceptable to the human mind, out of despair lifts the glass with poison to his lips.
