Joseph Mitchell fue escritor y periodista. Tras graduarse en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte, se trasladó a Nueva York con la intención de hacerse un nombre como reportero político. Escribió para medios como The New York Herald Tribune, The World y The New York World Telegram hasta 1931, cuando decidió darse un respiro del periodismo para trabajar en un buque de carga que trasportaba troncos desde Leningrado. Tras un breve periodo, regresó al periodismo y continuó escribiendo para diferentes publicaciones hasta que en 1938 fue contratado por St. Clair Mc Kelway para escribir en New Yorker, donde trabajó hasta su muerte, en 1996.
