The main character’s story was inspired on the life of Oakland entrepreneur ‘Borax’ Smith. Bringing his fortune to the United States, he is defrauded by a throng of money monarchs and only recovers it at the muzzle of his rifle. He embarks on a new life in California, where he creates a new fortune through dubious methods… only to have his crooked life turned around by the love of a woman.
