Recaptured by the rebels, they are taken by submarine to their headquarters, where Maria hopes to be able to cure the seriously injured Ai. In her Andean home village, Maria had been revered as a saint for her healing powers. She was secretly courted by a young man, but was still a virgin when she became pregnant.
