Peter Hessler, Journalist und Reporter, wurde 1969 in Columbia (USA) geboren. 1996 ging er nach China, gab zeitweise Englischunterricht und jobbte bei der »New York Times« in Peking. Von 2000 bis 2007 war er Auslandskorrespondent des »New Yorker«. In dieser Zeit schrieb er mehrere Bücher über China, darunter »Orakelknochen« (»Oracle Bones«), das für den National Book Award nominiert wurde. 2011 erhielt Hessler die Auszeichnung der Mac Arthur Foundation für seine feinfühligen Erzählungen aus der chinesischen Reformzeit. Heute lebt er als Auslandskorrespondent in Kairo.
