Reuben Archer Torrey (1856–1928) was an American evangelist, pastor, educator, and writer, who stands prominently among the preachers of the fundamentalist era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, Torrey graduated from Yale University and Yale Divinity School, followed by further studies in theology at Leipzig University and Erlangen University in Germany. After a period of pastoral work, Torrey joined D.L. Moody in his evangelistic efforts. Torrey served as the superintendent of Moody Bible Institute and later became the first pastor of the Moody Church in Chicago. He was also the dean of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (Biola) and contributed substantially to the spread of the fundamentalist movement. A key figure in the Christian missionary movement, his extensive travels took his evangelical message across the globe. One of his most enduring contributions to Christian literature is ‘The Person and Work of The Holy Spirit’ (1910), a seminal work that offers a comprehensive and articulate understanding of the Third Person of the Trinity.
