This is an autobiographical work by the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig, written between 1939 and 1941. Zweig wrote this in a few years before his death in exile. After Zweig’s death, it was published in Stockholm in 1942.In this work, Zweig combines the personal fate with the time together. Through the people and things he has experienced, he has shown the cultural life style of the city and country he lived in. He recorded the turbulent European society from the eve of the First World War to the Second World War. This book described his communication with some world-famous poets, writers, sculptors and musicians, revealing the little-known anecdotes of the world’s cultural celebrities, and interspersed the author’s various exquisite thoughts. Zweig wrote from the city of Vienna where he was born and his Jewish family to his 60 year’s old in September 1939, when the Second World War broke out. He believed that this was "the complete end of the era for 60-year-olds".
