Shen Kuo, who styled himself as "Cunzhong" and "Mengxi Zhangren", was an official and scientist of the Northern Song Dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Shenzong, he participated in the Xining Reform and was highly regarded by Wang Anshi. In his later years, he retired to Mengxi Garden in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. Shen Kuo has devoted his life to scientific research, and has profound attainments and outstanding achievements in many disciplines. He is known as "the most outstanding person in the whole history of science of China". His representative work Mengxi Bitan, a collection of scientific achievements of previous generations, has an important position in the global cultural history and is known as "a milestone in the history of science in China".
