About the author

Dr. Arati Bora Baruah, a retired Senior Specialist Engineer with a remarkable 35-year tenure at Boeing, spent the last decade of her career as a flight test engineer. Hailing from Guwahati, India, she received her education from local institutions such as Cotton College and Guwahati University before pursuing further studies in the USA at Indiana University, Bloomington, and later at the University of Washington, Seattle, where she earned her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.As a ‘loaned executive, ‘ Boeing entrusted her to serve as a professor at a local engineering college for two years, and she continued as an adjunct professor for an additional decade. The majority of her professional journey unfolded at Boeing.In the past decade, Dr. Baruah has dedicated herself to addressing water issues in India and combating global warming through extensive research and the application of her scientific expertise. Following her retirement from Boeing, her notable achievements include studying the circular nature of the Brahmaputra River using models, substantiating reasons against linking the Teesta, Santosh, and Manas rivers, investigating manmade floods in Guwahati, and contributing articles to Amar Asom on subjects like the Subansiri Dam and the potential hazards of constructing mega dams for hydroelectricity in the Eastern Himalayas, particularly due to the soft-soil nature of the region. Additionally, she has explained flooding dynamics in terms of rivers accumulating silt and sedimentation.In the realm of communications technology, Dr. Baruah made a significant impact by being an early and vocal advocate for the Assamese Unicode standard. She has authored books in English and also in her native language of Assam.
