Much more remains to be obtained from sources which I have partially, or not at all examined; and the reader will doubtless observe inaccuracies in state ments of fact and modes of expression: but I prefer to issue now what is here collected, however imperfect, to delay with the chance of its being altogether laid aside. Some things will probably be new to most readers, and afi’ord a glimpse of men who lived long ago, and the times that went over them. If space per mitted, I should have extended considerably the par ticulars relating to religious and ecclesiastical matters.
