An informational text for educators in early childhood settings.
Generously illustrated using photographs of collage art depicting labels with negative connotations alongside alternative words in flowing script.
‚Labels fixed to people about their behaviour are a type of shorthand and are often unhelpful. We can look at behaviour and try to understand it, to allow people to find a sense of belonging, to be more authentic.‘ Heather Gordon 1 August 2022

Heather Gordon (aka Andamooka Nanna) creates e Books for children about life in Andamooka, such as Andamooka Nanna and the Visit from Bianca.Writing as Barossa Nanna, Heather creates concertina collage books about flying bugs, gluttonous grubs, and cheeky chooks.’Anne is my middle name, so it is easy to change it up to Anna as someone with something to say, as I did with the concertina collage book Andamooka Anna and the Women on the Edge for the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival Exhibition at Andamooka during August 2021.Thinking about how people are labelled for their behaviour led me to reflecting about how words matter.I collaged some printed words on canvas then overlaid these with torn, filtered images from my photographs of outback South Australia. The print labels that carry negative descriptions were glued in the bottom left-hand corner with positive alternatives in flowing text horizontally across the images.I was thinking about attitudes and key words that foster social interaction. Again, the collage process helped me work through some aspirational words. This resulted in Andamooka Anna and Some Words That Matter.’Barossa Nanna and the Lonely Chook (2014) was Heather’s first published book. It gently deals with grief and loss in a way that children can understand. Moira Brennan’s art features in this print book.Barossa Nanna and the Chook Collage features chooks and gardens and was the first of the Collage books Heather created in physical-isolation during COVID-19, 2020.Barossa Nanna and the Counting Book – Bushland Mosaic is another collaborative arrangement between Heather Gordon and Moira Brennan.Heather has worked extensively in rural and remote regions of Australia. Heather’s love of the Australian landscape is reflected in her photography, mosaics and collage.Heather’s garden has previously featured in Australia’s National Open Garden Scheme (2014) and in an episode of ‚Poh and Co‘ (2015).
