He has served as the director of the Music Research Institute of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, deputy director of the Central National Orchestra, and editor-in-chief of "Chinese Musicology." His works include monographs such as "Breaking the Calm-Tradition and Change in the Drum Music of Northern Shanxi" and "Sound Overflows the Mountain Gate-Ethnomusicology of Northern Shaanxi"; collections of papers such as "Seeking Joy in the Wilderness, " "Wind Sounds in the Ear, " and "Burning Strings." He has also edited the "Complete Works of Yang Yinliu" (13 volumes), "Huang Xiangpeng’s Collected Works" (two volumes), "Chinese Musical Instrument Atlas, " and "Chinese Gongchepu Music Score Collection" (10 volumes).
