Er hat in Marburg, Tübingen und St. Louis studiert und an der Brown University promo­viert. Er forscht zur deutschen Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert und hat vor allem zur deut­schen Geschichte nach 1945 publiziert. 2006 erschien bei Princeton University Press sein Buch Homecomings: Returning POWs and the Legacies of Defeat in Post-war Germany.
