Pittman, formerly of Island Press, and Wes Jackson read and sorted through 52 issues of an old quarterly conservation publication called « The Land », which had been published from 1941 until 1954, the result being From The Land. Putting together this anthology had become a labor of love for them, so that we all may have a chance « to sample some of the best writing to come out of this most tragic era in the history of American agriculture. »
