She combed the archives of the Astor Library in New York and studied the official reports of the War Department and the Department of the Interior, in effort to give Native Americans back their “humanity” in the eyes of whites.

Born on October 14, 1830, Helen Hunt Jackson had a strong, orthodox Calvinist upbringing. Throughout the years, she used various pseudonyms, and published over three hundred poems and prose articles for the Independent, in addition to the travel essays, reviews, and children’s stories she wrote for other publications.
