An old fisherman named Santiago fishes alone at sea and catches nothing for eighty-four days in a row. Finally, on the eighty-fifth day, he hooks a giant fish. After a two-day and two-night struggle that nearly depletes all his strength, the old man finally defeats the big fish. However, the dead fish attracts more sharks, bringing even more difficult trials to the old man… Although he returns to the harbor with only the head and tail of the fish and a spine, the old man is not at all discouraged and is ready to go to sea again.
