Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) was a German theologian, philosopher, and historian of comparative religion. He is best remembered for his theories of the “numinous”—an adjective to describe the presence of a divinity—elaborated in his influential 1917 masterpiece, The Idea of the Holy.
