Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) was a German theologian, philosopher, and historian of comparative religion. He is best remembered for his theories of the “numinous”—an adjective to describe the presence of a divinity—elaborated in his influential 1917 masterpiece, The Idea of the Holy. Other works include Mysticism East and West and the posthumously published The Kingdom of God and the Son of Man.
