In 1919, even before the U.S. Senate ratified the peace treaty to officially end the Great War, historian John Spencer Bassett attempted the most complete history possible at the time. Here he asserts that Germany’s use of submarine combat left the U.S. with no choice but to fight.
About the author
John Spencer Bassett (1867-1928) was a professor of American history at Duke University (then Trinity College) and Smith College. In 1903, his praise of Booker T. Washington ignited calls for his resignation from Trinity. The “Bassett Affair” is now viewed as a landmark of academic freedom, as the college allowed him to stay on as a Professor.
