John Spencer Bassett (1867-1928) was a professor of American history at Duke University (then Trinity College) and Smith College. In 1903, his praise of Booker T. Washington ignited calls for his resignation from Trinity. The “Bassett Affair” is now viewed as a landmark of academic freedom, as the college allowed him to stay on as a Professor.
