Nelson Algren (1909–1981) was an American writer known for his novels about the poor. His first novel,
Somebody in Boots, relates the wanderings of Cass Mc Cay, a poor Texas drifter during the Great Depression, who ends up among the down-and-outs of Chicago. Among Algren’s many honors was a National Book Award for the novel
The Man with the Golden Arm.
