George Santayana (1863-1952) was a Spanish-born American philosopher, poet, and critic, whose aphorisms—such as 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” became famous. He taught in the philosophy department at Harvard where his students included T.S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens, Gertrude Stein, and W. E. B. Dubois.
