Finding something sinister, hollow, and aggressive amidst its genius, he nevertheless describes for the general reader the ideas of Goethe, Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and others—and does so with relative objectivity.

George Santayana (1863-1952) was a Spanish-born American philosopher, poet, and critic, whose aphorisms—such as ’Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” became famous. He taught in the philosophy department at Harvard where his students included T.S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens, Gertrude Stein, and W. E. B. Dubois.
