Nellie Bly. Cochran”s Mills (EE.UU.), 1864 – Nueva York (EE.UU.), 1922
Elizabeth Jane Cochran, más conocida por su seudónimo Nellie Bly, fue una periodista estadounidense que se hizo famosa por su viaje récord alrededor del mundo en setenta y dos días cuando intentaba emular a Phileas Fogg, el personaje de ficción de Julio Verne y por un reportaje en el que trabajó encubierta para informar de la situación de las enfermas de un manicomio desde dentro. Fue pionera en su campo y creó un nuevo tipo de periodismo de investigación. Cuando, en el primer periódico en el que trabajó, le asignaron las „páginas de mujeres” para cubrir la moda, la sociedad y la jardinería, quedó insatisfecha, así que viajó a México para trabajar de corresponsal en el extranjero. Con solo veintiún años pasó casi seis meses informando sobre la vida y las costumbres de los mexicanos, lo que posteriormente daría lugar a Seis meses en México. Nellie también cubrió los eventos de la convención de 1913 a favor del sufragio femenino y viajó a Europa durante la Primera Guerra Mundial para ejercer como reportera desde el Frente Este, con lo que se convirtió en una de las primeras mujeres corresponsales de guerra. Nellie Bly es, por tanto, una figura destacada en diferentes ámbitos: pionera del periodismo de investigación, magnífica escritora, aventurera y un referente feminista que logró vivir de su pasión y llevarla a cabo libremente en una época en la que el papel de la mujer a menudo se limitaba al de esposa y madre.
