Gaston Camille Charles Maspero (1846-1916) was a preeminent French Egyptologist whose scholarship played a pivotal role in the advancement of Egyptology as a scientific discipline. Born in Paris, Maspero was a linguist and a historian who refined the understanding of ancient Egyptian language and culture. His illustrious career began under the tutelage of Auguste Mariette, another foremost Egyptologist.
