In this 1891 collection of ten stories, divided into two parts, ‘Before Dinner’ and ‘After Dinner, ‘ Hardy returns to his invented county of Wessex for a behind-the-scenes look at the dynamics of country families and the women that hold them together: ‘a store of ladies, whose bright eyes rain influence.’

Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was among the greatest English novelists of his time. A naturalist infused with romanticism and enlightenment thinking, along with a flair for the supernatural, Hardy focused on class divisions and social norms.
