Sir Walter Besant (1836-1901) was a prolific English novelist and historian. With author James Rice, he wrote a number of successful novels, of which Golden Butterfly (1876) is the best known. Of his solo works, the best remembered are Dorothy Forster (1884) and All in a Garden Fair (1886), a novel which Kipling claimed inspired him to become a writer.
