Born in Edinburgh to a famous family of printers and publishers, Ballantyne joined the Hudson’s Bay Company at the age of 16 and spent six years in Canada, an experience that would later influence his writing. He returned to Scotland in 1847 and took up writing as a career, publishing his first book, ’Hudson’s Bay: or, Life in the Wilds of North America, ’ in 1848.
