R. M. Ballantyne (1825–1894) was a Scottish author of juvenile fiction who penned over 100 books. Born in Edinburgh to a famous family of printers and publishers, Ballantyne joined the Hudson’s Bay Company at the age of 16 and spent six years in Canada, an experience that would later influence his writing. He returned to Scotland in 1847 and took up writing as a career, publishing his first book, ‘Hudson’s Bay: or, Life in the Wilds of North America, ‘ in 1848. Ballantyne was known for his meticulous research and insistence on accuracy. To ensure the authenticity of his descriptions, he often tried his hand at the activities he was writing about, from mining to deep-sea diving.
