Enrollment in such colleges has grown far faster than traditional higher-education institutions. The for-profit colleges range from small, privately owned colleges to colleges owned and operated by publicly traded corporations. With 443, 000 students, one for-profit college is one of the largest higher-education systems in the country – enrolling only 20, 000 students fewer than the State University of New York.
