Amy lost her mum at a very early age. Alan was brought up in Cookstown in Northern Ireland. He went on to study at Trinity College Dublin and Cambridge University. For over thirty years he worked as a lecturer in the Centre for Mathematics Education at the Open University. He now lives in the Midlands of England with his wife Sheila.
